:welcome:

Start with the basics:
1.) Is it getting spark?
2.) Is it getting fuel?
3.) Is it getting air?
4.) Is there good compression?

id try not to use starter fluid. pull the line off the carb and make sure its pumping fuel. is the gas fresh? id recommend you get some clean fuel line from the parts store and replace the line coming out of the tank and the line going to the carb. This will help you see fuel flow if the pumps working. if the pump isnt working you can try and clean it, folks here have had good luck with briggs and Stratton pumps. if cleaning or replacing your pump doesn't solve it, could be crank seals, very common on an engine this old. the pump wont work if the seals are blown out. Check everything slo mentioned and let us know what you find. your looking for 120 psi for compression unless its an 82 J17 engine then 80-90 psi

check at the bottom of my post for a link to the G1 service manual
