May be when the engine is coming up against the compression stroke. Could be weak battery or perhaps worn brushes in the starter.

Yeah, that what I was thinking. I charged it and the two times I tried to start it, it didn't hesitate. I'll keep playing with it.

Popped out the Starter Genny "SG" today. FYI if you are curious and don't want to pull the SG out I saw the vid below - if you are wondering about your brushes then if you pop off one of the 4 inspection ports the surrounds the rear of the SG opposite of the pulley then you can see the brush depth. The guy alluded to if the spring tab is below the brush housing replace it, he didn't say how far below or any other details. I had about 1/8th inch left so I swapped them. The bearing felt like butter.

A lot of off-road guys upgrade their starters to DB electric and I have always used them as a backup to have on the boat or when off road. So I went to their website and found the SG that fits/ model# on Amazon. The longest I have used one of their starters was when I put one of their starters in a boat and it lasted over 5 years until I sold it. At $129 it will be a good backup if I'm in a pinch. If you ever do have to use it far from home then when you get home you can have the oem SG rebuilt at a alternator shop. Sometimes for $50, over $75 is too much - I like to pop off the rear/brush housing and have it ready for them to work on and they can do it cheaper and if you spin the bearing in front of them and show them the brushes they know you know what you are talking about and will more than likely give you a better deal to swap the 2 bearings, brushes, and polish it.

You better try out that fancy new aftermarket SG, make sure you arent carrying around a new paperweight that you can not return. Aftermarket SG are notorious for troubles. Check its ability to start & its ability to charge.
