AC Motor Conversions
OK not sure which forum topic to post this under so please feel free to relocate.
Been bouncing around with the idea of either building or buying a LSV golf cart. Not a big fan of DC motors as they come with too much baggage and poor high speed performance and inefficient. Looking to get 30 to 35 mph and that is hard to do with DC series and shunt motors, but a peice of cake to do with 3-phase AC induction motors. I am a member of e EV forum discussing AC conversion and looking for motors and got a great tip. There is a motor company called HPEV's (High Powered Electric Vehicles) and they offer two 3-phase motors called the AC 9 and AC 12. They are drop in replacements for 10 and 19 spline transmission. Coupled with the right VFD (speed controller), and voltage, torque up to 80 ft/lbs and peak HP up around 65. The motors are less expensive than the DC counterparts, catch is the VFD's are cost a bit more than the DC controllers, but over all about the same when you bundle both motor and controller. Has anyone done one of these yet? I am a bit surprised this has not caught fire yet. |
