Default 81 club car ds rear axle

Hello,

Need some help guys. I have a 1981 club car ds Serial number A815027279. There is a loud popping noise coming from the rear end where the gears are. What is the correct way to dissemble this. I have looked at the axles but i see no snap ring. The rear end has numbers NBO-1P-007 Serial number 116864 81M8. I have attached pictures. Thank you.

WilsonFG,
I think that is a Terrell differential, I have one somewhere around here.
I will take a look at it later today, or maybe you can search using the Terrell name.

Aflyer,

Thanks for helping. I searched as you recommended and didn't find much on the terrill differential. I did go back this afternoon after work and cleaned the brake backing plate better and now i see the snap ring on the axle and man is it going to be hard to get to.

The axles shouldn't need to come out to get the cases apart. They should just be splined into the center diff.
Remove the bolts around the case halves and tap around with a mallet and the case should pop open and the two halves should come apart.

More than likely if you have a clunk going on a gear is chipped or worn so badly it will need to be replaced and finding parts for that will probably be next to impossible.

Thanks Fairtaxme. I'll take it apart and see what the damage is.

WilsonFG,
I am sorry I didn't get to take any pictures for you, but yes as you found they are very small snap rings and required a very small set of Snap ring pliers.
The clunking going on might be an axle bearing, so it is probably worth pulling the axles to check.

No problem. I took the case apart and one gear had 2 teeth gone that were laying in the bottom of the case (picture attached). I doubt that i can find that gear. Guess I'll go on the hunt for a used differential somewhere that will fit.

Fairtax4me (sorry i left the 4 off your name, Number lock was off and i did not catch it until after i hit submit.)

Also any idea who would have parts for the Hitachi MT320-07 36-volt motor on this one as it has never been off before and it probably wouldn't hurt to rebuild it too if i find a rear diff to put back in it.

Thanks everyone for your help on this.

WilsonFG,
I have that Terrel differential that I am not using. I don't know where you are located and what shipping would cost but we can check into it.

Also, you can send that motor to Plum Quick in South Carolina for a check up, a rebuild, or even a Bandit upgrade.

I've got a buddy that has an 81 ds that has been sitting for years. I can ask if he's willing to part with the rear. He won't want to deal with shipping, so if your close enough to get it, I'll ask him. It's just North of Columbus, Ohio.
