Default Is this bad ?

Kids were driving the 95 club car down the road and it starting making a load noise. By that time the damage was done. Anyone seen the insides of a fe290 look this bad? What could have been the cause? The cart is all stock besides lift kit and tires.

She Over-revved. Are the link pins on the counterweight broken, or pulled out of the counterweight? That’s the usual failure if it spins too fast.

Oil was good, I lowered the engine after the lift to keep it leveled. Never touched the governor. My kids drove it more than I did. I wasnt looking for max speed.

I will go out and check when I get time. Rev limiter was connected, but who is to day it was functioning or failed.

Of course I know this is bad, what are my best options. I'm not confident in my abilities to put a different engine in. Is it possible to find this engine at a reasonable price? Either a ccw or cc...

I see one of them in there, and it’s hard to tell in the pics but there does appear to be some wear on one side of it. When those pins get worn they loosen up they start to “hammer” on each rotation and will eventually snap out of the cast iron counterweight.
It may have just been fatigue, or possibly damage sustained prior that has finally decided to fail completely.

It’s not necessarily governor adjustment that leads to excess engine speed. A sticking drive clutch can cause an over-rev condition, and may not be noticed right away. Hard to say unless you were on the cart and could hear/see exactly what it was doing before it failed. But the beginning of the end, probably one of the link pins.

Thank you for the info. It was a free cart, not sure how it was taken care of before I got it. I will post in the for sale forum and try to get lucky.

I feel your pain. Found a good number of places that will rebuild if you send them a usable core though. Our cores are not really usable...depending on the expectations.
