Default Starter-Generator ate itself

I installed a brand new starter generator on my 93 CC DS late last year. Used it over the past few weekends at the campground without any issue. We had a poker run Saturday and it ran great. My wife took the kids on a ride and called me saying the cart wouldn’t run. Towed it back to the camper and found this.

Is it OEM or aftermarket? I've seen an aftermarket one do that but never an OEM unit.

I've seen several aftermarket units do that. Near as I could tell from the ones I've seen the brush holders come apart and they do pretty much "eat themselves". Think of how fast the armature is spinning (several times engine RPM's). Then imagine anything getting "loose" in there while spinning that fast. Damage happens in an instant.

That's one of those cheap starter generators that have paper thin commutator bars and a something like a fiberglass core under the bars. The comm bars wear out or pop loose and the brushes hang up in that fibery ****.

You're not the first person his has happened to, but it's an unfortunate learning experience that you DONT Buy aftermarket starter generators.

Do you still have your original? The original SGs will last almost forever. Most of the time they just need a set of brushes and some new bearings and they're good as new and work for another 20 years.

It was an aftermarket from Amazon. Lesson learned. The new one will be here tomorrow, I purchased the new one from BuggiesUnlimited. I replaced the original because the brushes and bearings were shot. Figured it’d be an easy plug-n-play... I found out otherwise.

Like CP said, that one from BU is probably the same thing.

Silver sticker on the side of that SG. Does it say Dynamo on it anywhere?

The OE is long gone. The one from BU is in transit to be here tomorrow. The one pictured above had a Dynamo sticker on it.

If I decide to send it back, link for a better one?
