Well, I drained out the oil, pulled the carb, plug, valve cover and cleaned everything up. Put it all back together, added exactly 1.5qts of oil and cranked her over. Drove around the neighborhood for a little while. It smoked for a few minutes and stopped after, I assume, it burned off whatever was in the muffler/system. Seemed to run good! Thanks for the advice and saving me the trouble of tearing it down!

I too have had my oil light kick on sporadically on my 290. Its always during a hard run with the RPM's up high for a while. As soon as i let off the throttle it turns off. I assumed the oil is just being slung through the motor and pulled from the float.

My guess is you’ve got it turned up well beyond stock speed? That will do it. I unplugged my oil light and just check the oil level regularly.

HA, that's kind of a given when we are on buggies gone wild right? Yup still under the factory limiter but probably really close to it.
