Put on a set of rings, Top 2 will look OK bottom ring (oil ring)will have large end gap and no tension. Make sure the air intake (cooling air) and cylinder fins are clean. Very common in yamaha's Also make sure when done ONLY 1 qt of oil

Like Tom said, new rings needed. It is not uncomon for the oil rings to colapse/wear out on Yamaha golf car engines. I would also recomend honeing the cylinder. Why your at it, clean and lap the valves and install new valve stem seals on both intake and exhaust valves. That should bring you back to a solid ,dependable engine. Good luck Dave

well i have got it apart and the rings looked ok but the oil rings are not that tight they really don't have any tension to them but they are also really tiny compared to the aftermarket piston and rings, i am going to have this bored .25 over and have the new rings and such installed by end of week i hope and have this thing running by saturday yay, anyways thanks for all the responses

also biggie there was alot and i mean alot of oil all over the motor there was grass plugging the flywheel air vent there is at least lol 1" of oil on the head and motor i checked the flatness of the cylinder head and it seems ok, i also am going to have the block hot tanked when it goes in to be bored and i will have them check it to make sure it is flat and ok but the bottom end of this motor is amazingly great, the guy i bought it from said he was running 50w air plane oil im thinking that was to heavy but he said it would burn through a quart of oil in 3-4 hours of use don't know how true that is and he said he switched to 50w oil and it would go through it in about 3 weeks but when i got it, it had no power and oil on top of the piston which is got to be rings and since it was such a heavy weight oil probably wasn't burning it all and there was some left ? i dunno but it will be rebuilt and hopefully i wont have anymore problems out of it anytime soon, and i will be able to get some good use out of it anyways just thought id post a little more i can get some pictures of the rebuild and such but i think someone else has probably already done it. anyways thanks so much guys sorry for the crappy typing i was pulling another late night in the garage working on my 283 s10 lol lost track of time

Sounds like the guy didn't maintain the cart very well and the trash build up caused excessive heat, the oil breaks down and the oil rings failed.
Sounds like you got good advice and should get years of fun service out of it.

yeah i got great advice thank you all it is off at the machine shop i measured the ring gap after i got the specs lol it was bad it was 0.27 the max it could have been was 0.25 lol it needed the new piston a couple more months and i think i would have just been able to drop the new piston in lol i may have to go .50 over not sure till the machine shop tells me yes or no, but the guy really didn't maintain it at all lol its obvious now :) anyways will keep ya up to date
