1989 ezgo marathon need more power
So one of the primary uses of the cart when I bought it was to haul stuff and people up an down the hill to the dock at my lake house. It is a pretty big long hill it will do fine with 2 people and full of supplies (coolers food etc.). But I tried with 4 people and she didn't have enough to get up the hill. Any suggestions for more power? I know I could do big block but being a 2 stroke I would need rear end and everything and I think I would be better off selling the cart and doing a big block swap on a 4 stroke cart with a f/r rear end. Is there anything I could do to my cart to get more out of it? Any help would be great. Thanks

Re: 1989 ezgo marathon need more power
Getting a shorter drive belt will significantly increase your torque and climbing ability (albeit at the sacrifice of a bit of top-end speed, which doesn't sound like a problem in your case) ... 1" shorter should do the trick - roll your existing belt off the clutches and take it to NAPA (they carry Gates Belts) and go 1-1.25" shorter, you'll definitely notice the difference!

Re: 1989 ezgo marathon need more power
1989 was the changeover year for EZGO so you need to know if you have a 2PG or a 3PG. If the muffler is vertical and the clutches are parallel to the rear axle you have a 2PG If the muffler is horizontal and your clutches are aligned front to rear you have a 3PG with a stunning extra 2hp. Let us know what you have and I can give you the belt sizes.

Re: 1989 ezgo marathon need more power
The standard belt for the 3PG is EZGO part 27077G02 which is 1 3/16ths by 40 3/4 long. The DAYCO equivalent is part HP2013. As BCM states a shorter belt will give you more low end torque and better hill climbing ability. It does this by effectively lowering the gear ratio. In your case HP2017, at exactly 1 inch shorter would be a good choice.
You should also be aware that as the belts are only gripped on the outer edges, that is where they wear. If the belt has narrowed to 1 inch or less this will cause the issues you see. It is therefore possible that a new belt of the correct dimension will also remedy your issue. The choice is yours. Dave |

Aw geez, once again, Dave steps in and clarifies the obvious, I never thought about the belt possibly being worn (in my defense, however, I tend to break things FAR before they wear out so it was an inevitable oversight, LOL) ...

If you are not afraid to throw a couple dollars at it I would highly recomend talking to Glen at www.erlansontecnology.com. I have installed his kits in a 2010 ezgo 2001 clubcar and a 1995 yamaha all with better than expected results worth looking into he knows his stuff
