Soooooo Close ......
So, Folks - After spending sporadic time on an 83 EzGo with an 82 2 stroke Robin motor i have it turning over today but seem not to have a spark.
Is the coil in the picture going to work on a Robin with points or is that one for other ignition revisions ? I have 12v at one end of the coil, the points do pulsate the 12 on the other side, the ignition wire shows low resistance and the plug is new and not shorted. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

Re: Soooooo Close ......
What kind of plug wire is that? I think it needs a Solid core wire.

Re: Soooooo Close ......
Good call, roady - i checked the resistance and it's at 0 ohms so i'm guessing it's solid core instead of a resistor type wire.

Re: Soooooo Close ......
If it's a points sytem, one side of the coil primary should be grounded, the other gets the wire coming from the points/condenser.

Re: Soooooo Close ......
If you have points then you are not working on an 82 engine. It is going to be pre 1980. I only mention this as if you are ordering parts in the future many pre 80 and post 80 parts are not compatible. That said the coil you show looks like a coil from the post 80 (electronic ignition) system. I am not an expert on the points based 2PG engine but I think it had a standard can type coil. I do know that it is common to get corrosion down in those coils so it might be worth unwinding your HT lead, snipping off 1/2 inch, squirting some WD40 down into the socket and screwing back the HT lead.
Without wishing to call out the answer above the points switch the negative so the other side of the coil is 12 volts switched via the ignition switch and the throttle switch. Dave |

And that being said I also think with a points system you'll find at the B+ side of the coil you will have 9v as opposed to 12v unless you have a resistor coil which a resistor is built in the coil. This is for the purpose of extending the point life. I agree with Dave an 82 wouldn't have points.

Re: Soooooo Close ......
Well thanks for all the help, folks !
So it appears i am working with more of a frankencart that i thought. 83 body, based on the serial plate, part of an 82 motor based on it's plate with part of the motor being pre-80. Oh, brother. This cart will NOT beat me ! I have too much time and money in it ( plus i do enjoy a challenge ). Again, thanks, and I I'll keep you folks in the loop. |

My bad...
I was thinking of my Polaris Fuji 244cc motor. That coil looks the same. On the Polaris motor, it is wired as I described. |

Re: Soooooo Close ......
The starter / generator is mounted on top ( not the internal one ).
The engine code is EC25-2PG # 82-02883 which indicates that at least the cover is was stuck to is an 82. The serial plate on the chassis suggests that the body is an 83. It has points for sure as we have had this motor apart bolt by bolt. Does anyone have the right ignition coil they would like to sell me ? I really believe that is the last bit i need. One last thing - is the diagram i have attached the one i need to follow ? |
