Re: Weird possible clutch issue 86 Marathon
Ah the angry man avatar very cool. I am pretty sure that you will not have the spikes on the spring to clock the clutch but I wanted you to see the video as that will show you how the clutch comes apart and the tools you need. Of course you can change the spring tension by shimming the spring with a washer and that, I think, is a more scientific solution that fitting a shorter belt. Anyway I am curious to see if your clutch does come apart. I was going to try on my original which was toast anyway but in the end got lazy and sent it to the dumpster.

Re: Weird possible clutch issue 86 Marathon
Well so far I have the tool made up and it doesn't appear that the spring fits in any of the holes so I'm assuming it's flat - what I CAN'T do is seem to get the dang bolt out as I'm working in the garage (not the barn) so I can't get an impact on it (the clutch and engine keep turning and I can't figure a safe way of preventing that yet) ...
Going to have a little more coffee and head back up there, worse case is I wait for assistance later this afternoon although that may not result in a lot getting done as I have shows all weekend starting tonight - I'll kepp the thread alive as it progresses (for the record though, I found another issue yesterday, I seem to have lost the mixture screw out of the carb - still runs good but even though I KNOW that's just an idle mixture screw, I can't help but feel the cart won't come up to RPM under it's own power anymore, almost like it hits about 3500k and just stops pulling, make sense?) |

I use a 3/8 drive air ratchet to get that bolt out.

Re: Weird possible clutch issue 86 Marathon
It's flat - the molding marks for the holes are there, but they don't go all the way through ....

Another suggestion: when you get it apart spray the shafts with some dry lube and also the bushing. Maybe it was binding up due to a bad bushing? The spring arent very stiff. I can almost put mine together without a spring compressor.

You can use GRAPHITE or as I said a bit of antiseize works great.

No arguing here. I was told that by a friend of mine thats a 25 yr ezgo mechanic. We use dry lube on all of our cat graders and backhoes. It works good.

Re: Weird possible clutch issue 86 Marathon
None yet, I had shows all weekend so I was either tied up doing my "thing" or moving equipment (I don't generally bring a crew for the smaller shows so I end up having to don the "Roadie" cap myself, LOL) - today I'm heading to Chicago for some parts for another project I've been slacking on, I'm going to pick up some dry lube though and tomorrow is pretty much an "all-day cart day" ...
If I can even get the dang thing off (which if need be I'm sure an impact will do the trick) I'm also thinking that if the spring is weak (which seems to be the consensus) I'm thinking with some flatstock, clamps and the big vice I could almost rig up a stretcher and see if I can't pull the spring out a little to try and restore some of the "spring" - it's a longshot but if things look right for the task I'll prob give it a shot as it's definitely a cheaper option than a new clutch (which seems to be the ultimate endgame if all else fails so why not give some different approaches a try, right?) |
