84 ezgo gas 244 cc robbins engine replacement

Just pulled out my 244 cc robbins engine and wanting to put an upgraded engine
w/ more HP........ will a 23 vangaurd fit? or a honda motor? Is there is an upgrade with minimal mods out there for this cart??

The biggest issue is that you will lose your reverse gear (your 2 cycle engine ran backwards for reverse- a 4 cycle engine can't do that). If you want reverse and a 4 cycle engine upgrade, then you will need to find a rear axle from a 94 or newer 4 cycle cart (these have a selectable forward/reverse gear in the rear axle).

So would you say my best bet is to rebuild my motor and add mods to the cart to get more HP out of the stock motor?
Also in order for me to have reverse without installing a axle.
What type of motor would be a good fit for this w/o reverse?

Any 2 stroke will run backwards, but if the engine was not made to run backwards, you would need to modify the pulsar "trigger" so that the timing will be correct when running in reverse (otherwise, if the timing was 20 degrees before top dead center when running in the forward direction, the timing would be 20 degrees after top dead center when the engine is spun backwards).

EZGO solves this problem buy using a double trigger on the flywheel- the first trigger to pass the pulsar fires the plug and thus the more advanced setting is always in effect.

To make a long story short- just be aware that you will need to be creative and modify the ignition system if you install a 2 stroke that didn't come out of a golf cart.
