Default Carryall 2 starter wire melted

Hello All,
I replaced the starter in my carryall 2. After a day, the jumper wire melted. (This is the wire that just goes between two posts on the starter.)

What could have caused this? Would a too tight belt? Or should I look somewhere else?

Thanks!

Does anyone know what the jumper wire is for?

I'm going to replace the starter and not make the belt so tight and see what happens.

Thanks.

The jumper is to configure the motor into a series conected motor. The field and armature are in series vs a shunt or compound wired motor.
As far as why it is melting but none of your other are melting I am not sure off hand.
