Default Raise your hand if you've done this!!

No hands? I didn't think so.

I was driving my cart down a hill, slowly and under control. I stepped on the gas and heard a loud pop. It was turning over, but no "fire". I coasted to the bottom of the hill, and went into my diagnostic mode. That means lift the seat and look at things while pressing the gas. Yep, gas in the tank, belt turning, then notice the spark plug wire bouncing up and down. I blew the plug right out of the engine. It was obviously not tight, and vibrated loose, until it blew out. Compression test - ok!

in 1969, I was at Hall Street in St. Louis an after hours place where we raced, and a guy had a 69 396 chevelle super sport and he went to put in new plugs and forgot to tighten!
yep he blew 8 holes in his green metal flake hood

I'm a sparky guy when it comes to carts, but I'll work on just about all things with gas motors, so I know a little something about this problem.

Ford's 5.4 liter Triton motors were notorious for this. You'd be driving along just fine, and all of a sudden BOOM! there goes a spark plug - blown right out of the head. It was a bad design where the plugs could work loose, then the threads would get damaged from the vibration, and then, of course, you have an 8 round spark plug shooter.

One of the many reasons I don't drive a Ford...

You might want to check for damaged or pulled threads on your cart's head, and from now on periodically keep a check on the plug too see if it has worked loose again. Be sure not to over-tighten it though, as that could also cause damage if the threads have already been weakened from plug working loose and vibrating around. Hope this helps!

Thanks guys. It doesn't seem to have damaged anything but my ego. I'm just happy it went "pop" and not "boom".

Locktite? Really? If you do, be sure to use blue and NOT red

Do Not use "Loctite"! You should use a product called "Never seize". It will protect the threads in the head from seizing to the spark plug and also helps transfer the heat from the plug to the head. If the threads in the head are damaged, you can get a "helicoil" kit to repair them.

apparently "loctite " did not come through as sarcastic as when I was typing it.....for all readers who thought loctite would be a good idea -> please DO NOT use loctite on your plugs.
