Default Battery question gas cart

I have an old cart with built in S/G. about a year ago battery went bad and I took battery out of my 20HP riding lawnmower and it wouldn't turn the engine over. the cart had a automotive battery in it so I went bought another and it works fine. Now I just bought a non running cart with the 3pg engine and external S/G. It wasn't running and didn't have a battery. The battery cables gook original and the ends on them are the kind to connect to lawnmower battery. I just got it ready to start I took the same battery out of my lawnmower and it turns engine just fine. I like using the lawnmower battery because it cost less than 1/2 the automotive battery.----What goes here?

A lawnmower battery is more than adequate for a golf cart. I run one in mine and it turns over a slightly modified supercharged v-twin Briggs just fine.
A group 24 car battery is better, but not necessary. I'd guess you maybe had a bad connection?

No bad connection. I checked and double checked. I am wondering if the external S/G is more powerful, or because on the belt drive with different size pulleys you have a gearing advantage.
