Battery smell and noise
I have a 2009 Yamaha cart that is 48volt. I charged batteries last night and when I went into garage this morning I could smell the odor like there was no water in the batteries. I checked all the batteries and they are full. I also could hear what sounded like the batteries boiling even though they are not being charged. I was wondering if I could get any advise on what is going on?

Re: Battery smell and noise
That is normal. The charger overcharges every so often to balance the batteries.

Re: Battery smell and noise
I just replaced one cable because it corroded. The new one is doing the same thing. How do I stop this?

Have you load tested the batteries.

Re: Battery smell and noise
Corrosion is nearly impossible to eradicate from inside of a battery terminal. Best bet is to take the cable off, clean the cable end by dipping it in warm water & baking soda. Then use that solution and a plastic brush to scrub the battery terminal until it no longer bubbles. This may get rid of it, but may just slow it down.

Re: Battery smell and noise
I have not load tested the batteries. Load testing is checking the voltage with the batteries unhooked right?

Now when you say that the batteries are full, how full is full? Full is considered no more than 1/4" to 3/8" above the top of the plates.... Any higher than that is TOO FULL and will usually cause the batteries to "bubble over" as there is not enough vent space remaining over the top of the acid... Unless there is something very WRONG batteries do not BOIL OVER as in that case they would be very very hot to the touch... This bubble over is one of the chief culprits in what causes battery terminal corrosion.... |
