Yahama G16e Intermittent Controller
The symptoms are: non response to the accelerator pedal on some occasions after normal behavior for weeks. All other indications are normal: batteries fully charged, panel indicator (and measurements) showing good voltage. Clicking sound when key "on" and accelerator pedal pressed. No clicking sound when key "off".
Seems to correlate with high air temperatures (90s F) Early suspect: poor contact somewhere. Checked for loose contacts. None found. Used water spray to cool contacts. First, motor contacts. No change. Next, water spray of solenoid and controller. Immediate recovery. Current weather in afternoon 90s F. Multiple incidents. Recovered multiple times by pouring water on the CONTROLLER. I now carry bottles of water to pour on the CONTROLLER. It works every time!!! Is there an overheat protection in the controller? I am still not sure whether all the connections to the controller are tight because of accessibility. Any ideas or suggestions? |

Re: Yahama G16e Intermittent Controller
I have a G16E and was experiencing much the same as you..intermittent throttle response, but mine was almost always at extended low speeds. (And hot temps, but I never assumed the air temp was causing the problem).
More directly addressing your problem: My solution was to replace the factory controller. Yes, there is a thermal cutoff in the controller (or so I was told by a tech rep). I went with an Alltrax SPM 400A and while I didn't like spending the $$, it made all the difference in the world. If your controller is as old as the cart, I think replacement is going to be the best solution. |

Re: Yahama G16e Intermittent Controller
G16 OEM controllers were were pretty bad in my opinion. When I check out the yellow wire circuit & it's good, f&r good, batteries holding. I pretty much go straight for the controller, that's how many bad ones I have seen.

Many thanks to Matt_in_TX and cgtech for your responses. New replacement sounds like the cleanest solution.

Re: Yahama G16e Intermittent Controller
I finally identified the controller. It is an AXE4845. The label on it mentions a 5K -0 throttle. The cross reference guide shows a 0-1K throttle for a G-1 6 and AXE 4834 and 4844 as appropriate controllers. (I have not yet measured the resistance of the throttle and wonder if it is an important parameter?? ) There are AXE 4834s (and 4844s) available online at reasonable prices. It appears that the controller market is a jungle. (By the way, my use is in a retirement community with very gentle hills and the speed limit is 15mph) Any advice about controller choices and proceeding?
Thanks in advance. |
