g19 solenoid test

My wife's g19 is dead. When I switch the tow/run switch it would only "click" once and a while. When it did "click" it would run. I figured that this might be the solenoid. I wanted to test it so I hooked both of the battery leads together on one post (this should replicate the solenoid closing right?). When I first touched them there was a decent spark but I did it anyway. After connecting them together the cart would not run. What controls the solenoid and was I wrong to connect them together? Also what was clicking when I used the tow/run switch? Thanks for your help.

I did the same thing only i bypassed the switch and everything works now (except the tow feature)

It's really easy to "bench test a solenoid". Weather 12 /36 or 48 volts. There are 2 "small" wire leads and 2 big posts. The 2 small leads, (black ground and red positive) to activate the solenoid. Once activated, you should have continuity thru the 2 large posts. Just because you hear the solonoid "click", doesn't mean you have coninuity thru the large posts to let the current "flow".

If I bypass the solenoid and connect the two battery leads together it should work shouldn't it? Also, why the arc when I touch the wires together, what is drawing power when the cart is not moving? Thirdly, is the solenoid only controlled by the tow/run switch? Thanks

Hello Yamaha Comrades, fello club car'er here. I'm trying to help a friend out with his g19. It won't run and I suspected it was the solenoid, hence the reason I stubled across this thread. Here is what I've tried:

1. Tow/run switch operates. In tow, the back up buzzer doesn't work. In run, it does.
2. Forward reverse switch I assume works because it turns the reverse buzzer on and off
3. I tested the accelerator stop switch, it completes the circuit when test.
4. throttle sensor. gives me the correct readings according to what I found in this section
5. no click from solenoid
6. I have tried bench testing by disconnecting the positive battery lead, then depressed the pedal while reading the small wire voltage...nada
7. I assume the controller is functioning because of the reverse buzzer operability
8. I have not tested the motor.
9. I did place the positive lead from the batt pack to the other pole similar to muskydawg and also experienced a spark. this scared me so I quit.
10. On off switch operates because it turns the batt pack meter on and off when I turn it

I am at a loss. Do I order a new solenoid and hope that does it or are there more tests I am not performing.

Small spark is totally normal, controller has a bank of capacitors, they are low & need filling, they accept power at a amazing rate to fill. Small spark is totally normal, welding arcs not normal.

Ok, thanks cgtech. I'll bolt the two together then hook the positive up to the batt post and see if I can, once and for all, determine if it is the solenoid.
