I took it apart, first time I look inside a starter,i don't know what all it needs.. I know it needs the brush kit, bearings, pulley and the shaft threads are crossthreaded too..but I don't wanna get over my head with parts . I just bought the cart.. and it was running counter-clockwise instead of clockwise like it should.. I switched some wires, it ran clockwise for about five second and then it smoked.. nothing else after that.should I attempt to rebuild it?...

Sounds like you've done all you can do and should take it to repair shop to see if they can put the smoke back in it.
A thread file will fix most shaft thread issues, Pulley bad too? Someone should consider buying a service manual if they are going to continue to do their own work.

Have you looked into the starters that are "unique"? They can be wired ccw or cc.

I dont know if they do starter gennys, but i know they do motors! And they can get the parts and they have the resourses to do it. I would say give them a hollar and see what they would do. Might be a bit expensive, but a option!
