Default Starter or regulator

Hey all,

My 2002 gas model needed a starter/gen. a while back so I bought one and swapped it out. All fine for about 6 mos. then stopped charging. I put a new battery in just to eliminate that and still not charging as it wears down it wont restart. Heres the catch. If the battery has 12.5volts and up all works fine. As it dips down lower wont turn over. Put the charger to it works fine. What am I missing?
Thanks

My guess is voltage regulator. See links for how to check/replace.

Well, I ran the starter/gen. test as shown. Doesn't seem to be putting out any juice. Ordered a new one and will share results. Thanks

OK, ponied up $160 for new starter, installed and same 12.77 volts at battery, run engine and voltage drops to 12.3. I tested the old starter as per link on board? Gotta be something else. Tested voltage reg. but test isnt valid if starter isnt putting out juice, am I right? Help!

Thanks

Charged the battery to full charge last night and took the cart over to neighbors with wife and kids aboard. About a 5 minute ride. 1 hour later, go to leave, nothing! Battery reading 12.7volts. Get tractor and drag cart home now, no matter what I do starter (which is new) wont turn over. Motor is not seized, wires are correct and tight. Solnoid clicks and sends voltage to starter at large white wire. I am totally frustrated and lost now. Even if VR is bad it should turn over. Is there a way to "jump" starter just to see if it is working?

I would take a set of jumpers and go with the red leads from the + side of the battery to the white wire post on the starter. Then hook black lead from the - side of battery to the ground post on the starter. Its on the left side of the starter. It should turn over. You may have a bad ground or bad white wire. You should really check to see if you are getting enough amps back to the starter not just volts.

I assume i can read amps with my multi-meter? I ran a jumper (although only a 12 gauge wire) from battery + to white post and it turned over but only once . Kept trying again and again but nada! I had a battery charger set on 15amps on battery during test. Think there is plenty of juice there. Ground is good as are all connections. I think my cart is harder to work on than any of my hotrods! Guess I'll put the old starter back on and see what happens? Any and all advice is welcome!

Thanks

Jumped starter in cart, battery + to white cable and - battery to ground. Nada! double check and voltage is there 13+volts. Grab old "broken" starter and jump it on the floor. Same as above. Works great and putting out 19+volts at sm. yellow wire post. I think its marked df. Remove new starter which wont jump in cart, jump it on floor and it works great. UUGGHH! What is going on here!?

Thanks
