Did you put a standard piston and standard rings in it?

yes. it just seemed tight when starting because it would drag a little trying to turn over when starting.

With a standard piston and rings and not having the cylinder bored it should not have been hard to turn. Did you replace the rod bearings? I think Slo might be right, something might have been left loose and got into the gears. You did put the oil slinger back on the rod? That's all I can think of.

Did you disassemble the rod from the piston?

I have the motor repaired. I believe the cause was my friend used too aggressive ball hone which made it hard for the motor to turn over. There may have been a weak point on one of the gears and then it finally gave way destroying the cam and crank.
After sourcing all the replacement parts and labor to correctly put it back together I decided to send the motor to Plowmans and get one of their reman motors. Everything inside the motor is brand new and it runs so smooth and quiet. Don has been a great help. I couldn't be more please with the way it turned out.

Thanks,
Cris
