Default Starter/ Generator on 2pg

I'm looking at the electrical diagram for my 1980 Marathon, And it looks like the starter is energized through the solenoid the whole time that you are driving, and when you let off he accelerator it then shuts off. So after the engine starts does that overcome the starter and then produce voltage to charge the system? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Yes, the solenoid is energized the entire time. You can't just throw in an automotive solenoid and expect it to last long since they aren't made for that. Then like you said, when you let off the gas it shuts the ignition down. You can wire it so that it starts with the key and idles though, sometimes that's handy.

Why is that not recommended? I've got mine wired that way so if it can cause a problem I'd like to know.

Also, I meant that the starter/genny is energized the whole time as well as the solenoid. Sorry about that.

Thanks for the replies, just seemed odd to me. I would have expected the solenoid to be disengaged after the engine started and then the system would be charged by the generator. To me it seems like the motor would fight the starter, but as long as that's right I'm fine with it.
