Default G1 top end overhaul

I have had my jug bored and honed on my G1. And received the oversized piston and rings. Now stupid question. Is the intake the front of motor? The book shows that a mark goes to the front of the motor. As it sets in the G1 it appears as the exhaust side is front but this doesn't sound right to me. Also the piston has an "EX' on top. Is this the indicator? There is no arrow.
The book also says the rings are marked but the ones I received are not. One is tapered some though.

The 2 holes in the side of the piston face the intake port would be another way to tell which way it goes.

Thank You both.
Now looking at the reed valves.
The rubber like material that are on both sides of the triangle shape is partially gone near the bottom. Is this critical?

Yes. If that reed doesnt get a decent seal then you'll have fuel draw problems.

This is on the sides of the housing. Not where the reeds seat. Not sure if this is a seal or not.

Been awhile since I had one apart but I think I remember seeing this on my last one if it's on the sides and not the front sealing surface you should be fine
