2001 Eagle No Reverse, Moves without key
My Aunt's 2ED 30092 E1 started acting strange last week.
It functioned normally, but as I pushed it backward out of it's parking stall, with the key off, the backup alarm sounded. Last Saturday I put it into reverse and it lurched about 6" then refused to go any further. It did move forward so I turned it around and parked it. While I had the seat up cleaning the battery terminals, the seat fell forward striking the pedals. This unlocked the brake and the cart jumped forward striking the house hard enough to cave in the siding. The key switch was in the OFF position and the key itself was in my pocket when this happened. Further testing revealed no solenoid click when placed in reverse like it should. Since then I've read through the 96-2000 service manual but have not found anything specific relating to this particular year/model and this digital controller unit.. The key switch uses 3 wires, there is the normal speed pot w/ microswitch, one solenoid, a run/tow switch and an aluminum housing containing two printed circuit boards. I removed the key switch and tested for continuity in all three positions--and it appears to be working properly. Just five minutes ago I went out to take some photos of the controller and decided to re-connect the batteries since I had heard the backup alarm sound several times when I did this previously. It beeped 5 times then quieted. I then decided to see if the cart was still moving forward without the key and it did not. I tested forward and reverse...and to my surprise, the cart moved normally. Besides pulling the key switch for testing and removing the end cover on the controller, the only other thing I've done was leave the batteries disconnected for 2 days. Could removing battery power for for an extended time cause the controller to reset and clear a fault? I am trying to diagnose these problems and am asking for advice on what to do/look for next. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Jim |

Re: 2001 Eagle No Reverse, Moves without key
Following up:
After having the cart behave normally again I decided to wash under the cowl and covers to clear out cobwebs, leaves and dirt. As I lightly sprayed water near the front wiring harness the reverse alarm began sounding. I tested all the functions and once again all the problems were back. I dried out the harness, connectors, key switch and speed controller and let it sit out in the sun for 30 minutes with the power disconnected. I came back out and the cart was again functioning normally. I suspect there is a place somewhere in the front wiring harness where moisture gets in and causes these problems. I'll pull the harness loose, inspect the wires, replace the sheathing and seal everything against water intrusion. I'll update when I locate the cause of the faults and am convinced they are solved. fyi, even with the key in N, the unit still has power. You have to turn off the run/tow switch to cut off all power.
