ported and cammed yamaha
Has anybody really modified a yamaha engine like Brad Porcellato does on the club car engine ? I see he extensively ports, mills for compression the head and puts in a reground cam shaft along with HD push rods and comp cams valve springs. I see he also removes the crankshaft balance weights and lightens the flywheel on the higher HP units.

Re: ported and cammed yamaha
I've just heard it's ya nowhere because the ports are too small.

Re: ported and cammed yamaha
Yes, but I don't remember where I found it. Isky makes a cam for G9s and will make others. He makes cams for all kinds of stuff. You can port out the head then weld it back shut to make ports larger. Its a lot of work and when you can toss a clone in, well, I guess a lot of us do stuff for fun right so it can make sense to do up a stock engine.
Was here: https://www.smallenginecams.com/ But I don't see the cams page he used to have, he makes custom cams. Don't go there Ray, it could be dangerous.... |

Re: ported and cammed yamaha
I see Brad Porcellato is changing rocker arm ratios on stock club car units by welding in the push rod pocket and redrilling them to bump up the ratio.Hot rodders are hot rodders no mater what they are working on.If you got some time watch some of his videos on youtube.

Re: ported and cammed yamaha
I never figured out if my rockers made any power or not, I should have only done those and no other changes. I know in a car they don't do a lot typically. Its pretty easy to swap an engine now to something that can easily be modded, but I think if you get a good cam in a stock engine and did the head you would see significant power changes. Its about the only thing that would aside from power adders. Can't wait to get this one in mine, cam makes all the difference in these, other stuff is minimal.

Re: ported and cammed yamaha
I noticed when I used them on my early VC 460 at least another 1000-1200 rpms of pull. Brad porcellato shows more HP on the Dyno doing the exhaust side only. On several windsor ford engines and a friend's 3.8 l V6 switching to cleveland rockers showed definite power gains. But both of those are only a small ratio change not the 30% more lift and duration we get. Another thought is the billets rocker arms and moly push rods flex a lot less under the higher spring pressure.

Re: ported and cammed yamaha
I did a few things at once so was not sure. It did pull harder above 4K rpm without a doubt but the springs in there before that were not working right. I now have new pushrods to match the rockers (been using the stock lifan rods), and also the new HD springs, but these are only the stamped 1.3 rockers. Should work better then toss in the Vegas cam on top of that and according to him its only more duration so no extra lift to worry about handling. Not sure how you mod rockers and pushrods in a stock cart engine.

Re: ported and cammed yamaha
Many years ago I did mod a G2 motor. Ported and polished the head, sent the cam to a local cam manufacturer and they ground the bottom off a bit. Lightned the cast Iron fan by removing some of the fins. Motor ran awesome. No HP numbers but revved up great and the cart would really move out.
