'87 G1 Misfiring
All,
I was able to get the G1 (1987) fired up for the first time yesterday. I'll post some pics when I take them. Though running, the engine is misfiring causing some noticeable sputtering. The battery is seriously shot and I am only getting a 5 minute or so run out of it so I can't really troubleshoot a ton before the battery craps out. I won't be able to get a new battery until this weekend. That being said, I am hoping to brainstorm a bit. I did nothing to the motor itself so timing should be as it was. That said, I just got this cart and I can't say for sure what "was" was. For now, I'll assume that timing is ok. I know this gets debated a ton but I like running electric pumps on these. Along with the new battery, I am going to put an electric pump on this weekend. That should take care of any "not enough gas" issues. The guy I got the cart from said he put a new carb on to make it ready for sale. Looking at the carb, it is indeed new. I'll do some adjustments this weekend. The plug looks ok but I'll probably put a new one in any way. It's getting wet so crank seals are probably ok. I'll put new ones on if nothing else works. Anything else I should be looking for on this thing? I have a lot of old carts but this is the first time I monkeyed with a G1. |

Highly recommend not using electric pump did you get the stock carb with the cart even though the rebuild kit cost more than aftermarket carb they are way better

I know, I know. We can go back and forth all day about their virtues and vices of electric pumps. I have 4 of these old gas carts now to go with 4 old sparkys (yes, I have a problem). I have electric pumps on all of the gassers and have great luck with them. Again, I get both sides of that conversion. It's just a preference thing.
I didn't get the stock carb back, unfortunately. I would assume that the one on there now is a China one as it's doubtful that the guy who sold me the cart would have dropped a lot of money in a carb only to make the cart sell-able. Offhand, would you happen to know if timing these carts is ever a significant concern? With the older HDs / Columbias timing was a bear with the older points systems but a breeze with the "newer" electronic ignitions. Being that my G1 is electronic I am thinking that timing should be pretty stable but, again, as this cart is new to me I want to make sure. |

The pulser coil plate does have slotted holes so it can be adjusted a little but if the timing plate came loose I would think it would run good in either forward or reverse and not the other depending if it slid and advanced or retarded the timing. So does it run the same in reverse or better?

That's a pretty good call. It seems to be the same in reverse but it's tough to say. With the battery being poo poo I can't drive it much. I'll spin the belt off and to check it a bit without a load in the garage and see what's up. At least I won't have to push the cart if the battery peters out.

I was able to do some garage testing last evening. While feathering the choke just a bit that thing was running like a race car. Timing is certainly spot on. After it warmed up no choking was needed.
I'll get the new pump on and make some carb adjustments. Chances are that will take of that. If need be I'll do the seals as well but, the way this thing was humming without the choke once it was warmed up a bit, they probably have some life in them. Updated pic attached. Of note, I took the rear bumper off and welded a footrest onto the bumper mounts. The actual footrest I fashioned from on old hitch carrier that I had laying around. I have a rear seat for this cart on hand I just haven't had time to put it on yet. |
