Default Did I bite off more than I can chew? '90 G2 gas

Hi all.

So far I'm into this buggy for about $700. Been looking a long time, couldn't find anything under $2k so I figured I would get this one and fix it up.

Runs OK except for a million rattles. I think every nut and bolt is loose. 175 dry compression.

Needs some wiring repair. No stop switch. Flip a switch and it runs til you turn it off.

Steering loose. 2 bolts missing from the steering box to frame, other 2 loose. Don't know what else may be wrong with steering. Brakes very poor. Pulled the drums, plenty of meat on the shoes.

Needs a cooling shroud, carb air cleaner and some other stuff.

Top is about to fall off, attachment points are cracked and broken.

Pretty cool wheels though.

I appreciate any feedback.

I would not run it without the fan shroud. It will overheat...

For 700 i would buy it. Fix what you can, replace what you have to. When you go to upgrade don't think you would lose any on the investment.

Post a ad in the classifieds for what you are looking for. Also search the classifieds for the parts you need, their may be a few members that have what you need
Good luck with your new cart, around here that would be a good deal.

That thing on the end of the carb looks more like a crankcase vent than an air filter...

The wheels and tires are probably worth 700. Body and seats look good, 175 lbs compression You did good. Now for the bad news. It really needs the aluminum upper cowl trim for sturdiness the incorrect windshield frame ( the rear top frame bars are incorrect also). Wood flooring Need an engine tensioner assembly. Starter belt is gone. Looks like an aftermarket carb to me. Looks like the govenor has been bypassed Yes you need the engine cooling shrouds. Has a cheap solenoid, but useable. Get that stop switch working so it only runs when you push on the pedal. If the brake shoes look good, probably after market and don't stop well on a good day. You can post in the parts section and get most of those parts used. Welcome to the Yamaha gas section, most these members care so much about helping.....you will be amazed with the help offered.

If it runs good with that air filter. They might of messed with the jetting/mixture of the carb. I have somthing similar on a G9. It Wolud lean out and backfire and make the engine hot with factory jet/settings. If you get a stock sealed air box it might be very ritch.(too much fuel)

If you want to verify year & model, the serial number tag is still present. But painted over. Tag is aluminum, and numbers are stamped in.

That's definitely a G2 but I'm thinking that it's older than you think, that's a great buy for the price, I would look for the original air cleaner for it, the one you have could give you some performance issues.
