Default 1995 fe290, having starter belt problems. Adj. it many times. It's not the tension.

I have a 1995 club car gas fe290. I had trouble with a new starter belt, and thought it was just the adjustment.

But I've properly tightened it about five times now. Its still is having problems with the starter generator spinning and not catching. It's like it keeps stretching the belt and causing belt burn.

To my eye it looks like everything is ok, but something has to be off. Will a bent clutch or improper alignment cause this? I'm at a loss with it. It has a new drive and starter belt, but the starter belt is probably shot now.

Any help is appreciated.

Pulleys can get worn make sure there is no grooves if that checks out throw a compression gauge on it it's a long shot but plugged exaust can cause high compression making it difficult to turn over

Not sure. It came from the guy that helped me get it running. Probably a cheap one.

I have a new exhaust on it. We did a compression test when I first got it running again. It was 160 if I recall correctly.

But I know what you mean about being hard to turn over. Turning it by hand past the compression is kinda hard. The guy that helped fixed it said it was normal.

The pulley may be a possibility, I didn't think of that.

Everything on it is running perfect exept this. I haven't been able to take it back up to his shop, it's about an hour away.

even if it is a new belt if it is to narrow it will not work properly, it will ride on the bottom of the pulley instead of the sides and wont tighten properly and slip, been through this many times, OEM belts are the only way to go.

I'll look into that also. He's old and orders from a catalog. It's a golf cart supply company, but I'm sure he'd probably go aftermarket.

It has wore the belt into a triangle shape. Do you think it was a bad belt or do I need to do something to the pullies? They have some buildup on them but they don't seem to be grooved.

If pulleys aren't grooved I'd say wrong or defective belt
