87 marathon 2pg wont run

When I rebuilt my 86 marathon the same thing happened to mine on the clutch side.
In addition to the green lock tite and dimples. I made a plate out of Lexan with a hole through the center slightly larger than the crank and bolted it using existing bosses in the lower case just as some added insurance.
A hillbilly seal retainer.

Would this method work on a 3pg? I tried the hei mod and had a nasty backfire and notice a puff of smoke coming out down by the clutch... now with the old ignitor and coil back in the cart sometimes wont fire in forward or reverse. I tried starting fluid near the seals and nothing changed.

Not sure to be honest. Never worked n a 3 series.
