It’s not hard to upgrade a 36v cart to 48v, and very common to do. Good luck.
Is there specific pictures to take or things to look for to see if it was ever a 36v? Modz flip 4 rear seat fit like crap like it had wrong parts

In 1996 all 48v carts were solid state. They had OBC, They had 3 micro switches on the F&R, they had a round 3 pin charge receptacle.
In 1996 all 36v carts were resistor coil carts. They had a 2 blade charge receptacle versus 3 pins. They had a row of resistor coils behind the batteries.

That orange box is the OBC. If u do the upgraded controller u will have to upgrade the forward reverse switch and solenoid also as Scotty stated. I upgraded my 36 volt to 48 volt with 500 amp controller and kept the stock forward reverse switch and haven't had any issues. Nothing gets hot and runs perfect but i heard that the 48 volt club car forward switches aren't as stout as the 36 volt one. In my case I had a solid state controller stock on my 36 volt, not a resistor coil. Again depends on how much u want to spend on it as the upgrade are expensive.
