Nead help torqueing bolt on drive clutch
I have the engine on the bench. A 244 robin. Would it be OK to put a plastic handle of a screwdriver in the exhaust port to hold the crank in order to torque the bolt on the drive clutch. Or is there a better way?
Thanks Chuck |

Re: Nead help torqueing bolt on drive clutch
I think that would be a very bad idea. I just tightened mine up with wrench against the compression of the engine and 9 months later it is still good. You could use an impact wrench if you wanted a little tighter or just tap the wrench with a mallet. Just remember that one day you might want to get that sucker off again.

Dave so I don't need to torque it to 50 ft. lbs.

Re: Nead help torqueing bolt on drive clutch
When I put mine on I put one hand on the starter pulley and used that to tighten the bolt against. As I said it might not be 50 foot pounds but it hasn't moved in 15 hours of engine time.

Re: Nead help torqueing bolt on drive clutch
I hand tourqued it myself, then used the impact gun just to make sure it was tight myself.
Anything I need to get off with an impact gun usually goes back on with an impact gun..... |

Re: Nead help torqueing bolt on drive clutch
Sorry, should have put full comments in.
Dave is right. Screwdriver to hold piston = Bad Idea. I just ratcheted it in as tight as I could get it while holding on to it, then used the impact gun to snug it up that little bit more. Of note, I am using a small impact gun (1/2") that only generates up to 180 ft-lb of torque, though it probably is somewhere under 150 in use. If you're using something bigger - be careful or use a torque limiting bar. I'd hate to break a bolt somewhere in the crank or put too much stress on the connection. |
