Governor removal.

Leave the governor shaft and everything internal in the rear axle. It will not hurt anything for the bearing to move somewhat freely in there. But you will have to recable and rerun your throttle cable to the carb. I had a 2002 I installed high speed gears and just left the governor shaft (nothing attached). It was big blocked so running the throttle cable was no big deal. But install your two high speed gears and then leave eveything else in the axle as it was.

I am going to plug mine off because the governor shaft leaks oil down on my oil cooler then the cooling fins get filled with dirt. There is a thread on here somewhere that says what size plug to use

That link above is nothing like what mine looks like. I removed all of the unused parts tonight. I pulled the thrust bearing and then unscrewed the 3 screws (2 regular philips and one long alignment screw) then the weight basket was removed. Then took the screws out of the governor shaft and pulled it out. Taped the hole to hold a 7/16 x 20 bolt. Smeared it with thread sealer and screwed it in place. Here are some pictures of mine. The shaft won't move in the housing because of the shoulder on the shaft and I couldn't get the gears to move with the thrust bearing removed so things should be perfect now. Less rotational weight will mean it will run the 1/4 mile faster.. Well maybe not measurably faster but anyhow I didn't want it swinging around in there.

I don't have a picture of the stuff removed. I am not going to be back to the shop for a week. But in the pictures above... grab that thing in the first picture with the red arrow and pull. It will come off and look like the 2nd picture. Then take the 3 philips screws out and remove that metal plate with the weights attached. That is all you can remove. The rest is made on the shaft and won't come off.

Then in the 3rd picture remove those philips screws and then pull the shaft out and plug the hole any way you want. I was going to weld it up and grind it off smooth with the outside of the case but that is a lot of work for something that no one will see.

speedfreak, Thanks for the info! I think with that i should be able to remove it. I'm going to tap the hole and put a screw through the rod hole.
