Default 1999 EZ-GO Txt Forward Reverse Question

I have searched but here I am with a new post. When I back out and stop and then attempt to put it in forward, it still stays in reverse. I have to sometimes rev the engine until it clunks and then goes into forward. The same happens when I am in forward and stop and then want to go into reverse. I am not sure if the new, smaller drive belt is the culprit or not. What I have found that works sometimes is to not coast to a stop but actually jolt the final stop and while leaving my foot on the brake, I can then change directions without issue. Any suggestions?
