Re: First cart, need so much help! Yamaha G9
Oh my gosh, NEWB! When it doubt replace the spark plug! The plug had great spark and we couldn't figure that would be it. I can't believe I tore the flywheel/fan off the side and got to the pickup before trying the **** plug. I did every ignition related test in the book and checked every spec and missed the obvious. Runs great now! Well, great I guess is a bit of a strech. At really slight throttle it bucks and surges. Working on that now. Thinking governor issue?
Still trying to figure this voltage regulator causing it to keep turning over. Has anyone ever seen that before? If you plug the VR in and puch the pedal it keeps turning over after the pedal is let up. Unplug the VR and it will quit and then work like it is supposed to with the VR unplugged. Hard not to call a spade a spade on that one right? |

Re: First cart, need so much help! Yamaha G9
Check this: http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-y...-starting.html
Out of adjustment carb or leak in intake (black plastic spacer that cracks really easily) or leaky airbox can cause poor mixture at low throttle and can foul the plug out believe it or not. I recommend you use the newer yamaha plug the ngk bprs2es or whatever it is for newer carts, the dealer here told me to use it as it will foul less often and he is right. The mixture screw will adjust low throttle but high throttle if airbox is not sealed it can also have issues, you have to fix or rejet the carb....hog the main out a little larger. If a governor issue it will move the throttle on the carb, but you should have the throttle cable under the floor adjusted for some free play pedal travel after it starts up to when it opens carb. I set it so top of pedal moves about 1" between running to actually gassing it to move. I also set the idle speed really slow so it idles just faster than the starter, set the mix, set the mix a little richer it starts better that way. But some turn the idle speed off. You have to idle it to set the idle mix though. Idle off likely it will not deliver fuel at all. |

Thanks for the reply! My airbox is a MESS. The lid is all "rigged" up so I will start there.

I imagine you know that the air box has to seal at this point, so this is just a gentle reminder!!

Re: First cart, need so much help! Yamaha G9
And why exactly is that? I guess the engineers at Yamaha are paid the big money to know exactly how much air it needs to run quietly and efficiently right? I disagree with the engineers and Chrysler and Cummins all the time on that point! But I would imagine it has to do with the jetting of the carb right? Is that why a previous poster mentioned rejetting and boring part of it out to compensate for more air from an aftermarket setup?

Re: First cart, need so much help! Yamaha G9
The Yamaha people know a golf cart spends its life on grass. If grass and dust are allowed to penetrate the motor, causes a shorter life span and increased maintenance. All brands are boasting that their brand lasts the longest and least maint. so, sealing air intake is imparative.
Also, just my opinion, but using an open element filter is a bad way to go. Noisy, gets dirty quickly, and poor efficiency. Gut the stock air box and jet to that... But this is only after you have the car running perfect, in stock configuration. |

Re: First cart, need so much help! Yamaha G9
I took the silencer off mine it seemed to help slightly, taking more off did not change. Anyway had to file the main jet out some to make it run right with only that silencer part off it. That is the part over the generator, I left the rest on it. I took the guts out and no difference so put the dust parts back in. I could hear the intake a little more but not much. Yes carb jetting is sensitive to airbox seal, it will actually foul the plug if you don't jet it.

Re: First cart, need so much help! Yamaha G9
I wanted to post up about the one issue no one seemed to have an answer for. The starter/generator staying engauged once the pedal was depressed and not stopping when released. Turns out the voltage regulator was to blame. Purchased a new Yamaha regulator and this problem is gone. Just wanted to make note incase someone hears of it again.
