Looking for a CDI/Igniter alternative
Project: 1992 G9A
I've been searching til my fingers are sore, please help. Before sho's suggestion, I'd been looking. The thread on the 2 stroke, $20 project was easy to find. There's still a 4 stroke in the buggy, a 1991 JG5. I'm looking for an alternative to the mega-bux Yamaha/Mitsubishi igniter. Sho mentioned someone using a Ford or Mopar unit. At this point I'm not opposed to rigging a Chinese box in there. Anyone out there gone this route? TIA Thanks Karl |

Re: Looking for a CDI/Igniter alternative
It could be done without too much trouble. "GM HEI" module would be my chosen method, smallest, lightest, fewest wires. Only one significant flaw, there would be zero spark timing advance with any of these automotive ignition boxes. That could result in overheating and hard starting/low power, the overheating is the major concern.

Re: Looking for a CDI/Igniter alternative
The HEI will allow the engine to run, but the timing will be retarded and cause overheating and very low power.

Re: Looking for a CDI/Igniter alternative
The Ford and mopar boxes have no built-in spark timing either, as far as i know. That is the problem with this type of conversion. I have been considering trying to make my own fully programable "spark box" out of a "arduino" or "raspberry pi". While im at it, might as well include stand-alone fuel injection controller. Too bad im new at this Arduino/Raspberry Pi thing, at the very beginning of the learning curve.

Re: Looking for a CDI/Igniter alternative
Understandable that no timing advance could be an issue. Gotta be another route to look...
I've been hunting around & have been finding a ton of Chinese CDI boxes. This particular unit actually looks like, from the pic, that it would be a direct replacement. http://www.chinesemotopartswholesale...art-p-709.html Also found performance AC fired CDI/coil kits that claim 4 degree advance & no rev limiting. I'm sure there's DC units out there too. http://www.ebay.com/itm/GY6-50cc-150...0ba015&vxp=mtr Not sure how the JG engine would handle no rev limiting though... Anyone tried any of these type options? |

Re: Looking for a CDI/Igniter alternative
If your factory throttle cable governor is still hooked up, over-revvimg wont be a problem

Re: Looking for a CDI/Igniter alternative
Yeah, shipping from overseas is a pain, does take forever.
I may order one or 2 of something like this today & see if I can get them working. I can probably find connectors at radio shack to make an adapter harness. http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-Pin-DC-CDI...19ddb7&vxp=mtr |
