Default 94 EZGO....valve question

Ok all you guru's.....I've had this cart in my shop for about a month and am tired of looking at it.

Originally, I found that the intake valves were shot. They had actually curled on the edges so it wasn't letting enough fuel into the cylinder. The tappets where almost adjusted out all the way.

So....I replaced the 2 intake valves, lapped them in, set them to spec. (.004), double and triple checked timing before installing the clutch (don't have a clutch puller).

Put the motor together, installed, connected wiring and wouldn't hit a lick. Verified fuel to the carb, pulled the plugs and they were soaking wet with gas.

Took valve covers off and checked rockers again to verify .004. Took out plugs, dried off. This time when I cranked it, it started right up! Running very high rpm's (I suppose...never heard it run!). But it started backfiring, exhaust manifold smoking so I released the accelerator. Pushed accelerator again, and it wouldn't start.

So I'm wondering.....is it possible that I now have reversed the original issue. That the old valves may have burned or opened up the intake in the head and with the new valve it's getting too much gas????? Should I adjust the intake valves to .007 or .008 so the valves don't open up as much????

Tired of looking at this red cart! Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
