Default 90 g2 engine frustrated and sell?

We got this cart cheep and wanted to have ready for camp this spring, I just don't see that happening on my income, I just don't understand these engines and for me to just keep buying parts to try and get it running will probably cost me more then I have, I narrowed it down to head gasket but still don't make sense to me so I have not bought it yet,, I had just thought and thought on what to do, I am leaning towards just scraping the idea of fixing it and buying a gocart with a briggs engine that has the clutch I need going with that, I have seen them for a couple hundred around here and really debating,
Now just wonder if anyone needs this engine, I know the s/g charges when I had it running it charged the battery, good exhaust, and so on, I would like to be able to just sell the engine and go in the briggs direction, something easier for me, lol..

Wait a minute Murf, you need to do a compression test first. 4 strokes with the throttle wide open. It has to be at 165# or over. If it isn't, then you have to make sure the valves are working, and adjusted to .004 .

I check compression and was 155 once and checked again and got 160a that's why Im baffled, checked and adjusted valves and same, if it does run its like out of time our bent pushrod, I checked everything and seems to right this is why I am so confused.

Smallblock said these ignitions run on an open/closed ground. So you have to make sure all grounds are a solid connection. There is a ground connection right in front of the starter, that has an 18 gage wire (ground wire) leading INTO the main wire harness. Cut that wire back to fresh wire and put a new lug on it and reconnect it to the ground lug on the starter. If that wire is to short, cut it back, and bring a short jumper wire out to it. That's what I did.

Take off the clutch cover, look at the weights on the primary clutch. All 3 need to be be there, not broken, and not loose. That can make a car run like bad timing.
Smallblock is the MAN! He may be the OLD MAN, but still the man!!

Thank you for the info I hate to sell the engine but frustration is getting the better of me,, times like this I wish there was a fellow cart enthusiast close by that would stop by and help a not so smart one out,, lol,,
I will check that as soon as I can, I was told about the clutch but that slipped my mind, I will have to start writing things down,,
Thanks..

Also no grounding to the frame! all grounds go back to the battery, (or at least back to the large ground lug on the starter)!!! Again, what I did!!

That engine has no head gasket, there I saved you some money

Don't get flustered, they are simple as a B&S. Most things are cheap. Explain your problem and what it does, how it runs, etc. and we can help. Most common things is the airbox must be sealed really well or it screws up the jetting. It should still idle ok and often they run ok with no hose on the carb (for testing only). Wiring is an issue there is no frame ground so everything has a ground wire just like the positive side, and they go bad and get corroded connections. You have to check them all, remember these carts are old and everyone just drives them. If the clutches are not right it will have no power usually. Plugs can foul out and look just fine, I recommend you use the NGK #2 like the newer G14/etc use they don't foul as bad...this usually happens when you have a carb problem that screws up the mixture. The ignition is just a pickup on the crank to the ignitor on the gas tank (its like a CDI) to the coil and plug. Rare for it to go bad excepting the wiring possibly. Power goes to key, then pedal switch, then lights up the starter and ignition, its that simple.

Thanks all,
Ground, Ground, Ground, think I know where the problem is at least I hope, what I did first time I asked was I pulled the engine so I could get a better look at it and work from bench, I seen bad wires and replaced and rewired what looked bad, cleaned all connections of coroshion and replaced,, after hearing this I remember there was a ground from battery to frame, seemed odd to me the two wires to ground on battery but was that way when I got it so I left the same,, guess that will be the first to go,, once I do that I will next pull outer cover from clutch and check that to see what if anything is wrong in there,,
its just been so long since I work on these smalle engins, probably 10 yrs, and I have a hard time remembering what I did yesterday let alone 10 yrs ago,, lol,,.
hopefully if warms up in the next couple days so I can check it out,,thanks.
