throttle adjustments for g16

I recently snaped my throttle cable at my gas peddle on my 2001 G16 and when I replaced the cable, the car runs bad. it back fires and high revs like the motor is going to blow up(it runs wide open) ive tried adjusting the cable on both ends but nothing seems to change except some times the gas smell is heavy and some times its not.what did I do to my car. any help would be appreciated.

Much better if I see it, but maybe the throttle is held open in the at rest position. It should be closed or the throttle stop should be resting on the adjustment screw when off the throttle.

Mine, the gov. is by-passed, so the cable is direct to the carb. Much less to deal with in my situation.
