Absolutely, if more parents spent time on projects with their children society would be vastly improved. Good job Mike.

Success! (sort of)

Got the clutch bolt all tighten up, cart starter first try. It ran backwards because I had two of the lads to the starter reversed, but that was easy enough. Still needs some tuning. Engine won't stop when foot is released from the pedal, and it "feels" a little slower then before, but off to a good start.

After a few runs up and down the driveway, all seemed fine. After sitting a few hours, the starter stopped turning over. I will move troubleshooting that to another thread on the forum.

Thanks all for the help. It has been a great learning experience for me and my son. I'm s computer programmer by trade, so I don't get to do a lot of projects like this, but I am really enjoying it. Much fun!

I would reccomend getting a new bolt and maybe one that is about 1/4" longer as well - you don't want a 89 cent bolt ruining your crank shaft $$$. You can see how much thread is touching by checking the old bolt. you may want to either washer out the longer bolt, but try to grab some new threads if possible. I had the same problem on my 87 two cycle. While the clutch is off make sure no one has flattened the crank - mine was so I had to trim off about 3/16" off the chamfer on the crank to allow the clutch to seat properly....
