Default '86 running rough

On my '86 ezgo it seems very temper mental when it is running. Sometimes it will not crank just tick and kind of rock forward like it wants to turn over. Once it finally starts it keeps cutting out and even sometimes dies. On some occasions though it runs flawlessly. I'm really confused on what is wrong with it. I'm wondering if there is a loose connection somewhere. It has rebuilt engine and new carb on it.

When you say it dies, is the starter still turning it over?

The starter doesnt turn over the cart just makes a ticking sound. It seems to start if I put it in reverse but not all the time.

I would check the starter/generator brushes as well as the starter/generator bearings. Sounds as if the starter is getting bound up sometimes causing the system to short out and cause the solenoid to just click. Also, check and clean the connections on the F/R lever as these need to have good connection to run.

Goodluck and keep us posted.

Ticking/clicking could also be signs the starter soleniod is failing.
If your battery voltage is decent (12.6V = 100% charge), then check your battery connections & all others you can see/reach.
Determine where the clicking is coming from.
