fresh rebuild problem
i rebuilt my ezgo 295cc robins engine today.it didn't have any compression so i pulled it apart and ringed it. i made it about 20 minuets on the new rings and it seized up solid. i pulled it back apart and realized it spun a rod and cap farthest from oil pump. the one closest is fine. i torqued all bolts and was thoroughly clean with assembly.there was a little aluminum on the crank journal also does anyone have any secrets on cleaning this up instead of getting a whole new crank.and is it possible i missed something on the rebuild that caused this. i know i didn't use new parts but every thing seemed to be in good shape other that the rings. any suggestions would be great.

Re: fresh rebuild problem
New rings won't seat unless you properly hone the cylinder walls also ring end gap is very important when it comes to having proper ring pressure on the cylinder wall. So throwing rings in an otherwise worn engine will probably not work well.

Re: fresh rebuild problem
it was properly honed and ring gaps made spec the rings are ok. its the rod bearing that is the new problem.

Re: fresh rebuild problem
I've heard this prob. before and have been told that muriatic acid will clean the aluminum off the crank. Some really light emory cloth may help shine it up afterwards...
Don't know about that spun bearing though,,, Might have been it's time??? |

Re: fresh rebuild problem
Are there any bearings? Or is it just an aluminum rod on a steel crank journal?

Re: fresh rebuild problem
Hello Scotty, Lady Bug,
Bearings are build in after having damage or before you want to race, so not the standard. Every engine which is used in cartracing has bearings in the rod. The bearings, rods and crancks are realy build together, so polished(?) together on the bench. A litle to much or less NM will couse kaboom..... When building it together: Be sure to have clean and open oilpasages in the engine. Be sure the oilpressure is enough to get the oil to the end of all, the parts at the distributionside. This is almost always the first rod to break up! Prelube the parts before building them together. Use new bolts every time you open the rodbearing. (I don't know which type of bolts, reusable or not, are in our engines, i only want to be sure.) Benno |

Re: fresh rebuild problem
there are no actual bearings the aluminum rod itself is the bearing.

Re: fresh rebuild problem
That's what I thought so if the crank journals are still within tolerance then you could clean them up & get a set of rods?

Re: fresh rebuild problem
Also did you index(punch little marks) in the rods and rod caps before dissasembly.
You know ./. ../.. if not you may have the caps on wrong rods or flipped. |
