Default Possible charger problems

Installed new volt meter on cart today. Volts read 48.4 via multimeter before unplugging charger. New volt meter read 48.5v when installed. Plugged charger back in ..... nothing ...... had to push in reset button. Couple hrs later checked it ..... charger off volts read 48.9 ...... not good. Reset button again pressed, came back on.

Does this sound fixable, or time for new charger?

Went back out and checked on it. Charger was off, breaker button was OUT. Read 49.9V. Turned it back on again.

What batteries do you have? Is it an 8x6v pack?
How old are they?
Have you checked all of the batteries voltage individually?

Did you unhook or disconnect anything to install the voltmeter?

Yes, unhooked the battery pack, but charger breaker button was already OUT.

An hour after resetting charger, it was off again ..... breaker button out .... reading 50V.
Reset and turned back on.

I am leaning toward charger problem. If so, what is the method to charge the individual 8V batteries with 12V charger with damaging them ..... until I can get another charger.

OK, I was wondering if it had a 8x6v pack because of the high charge rate. US batteries do tend to have a lower internal resistance than other brands, so if they were low on charge that probably explains the high charge rate.

Most of the time that behavior, charger runs a few minutes then the breaker trips, is because of a poor connection in the charger, or the breaker has failed. Those breakers are only about $20.

Pull the cover off the charger and make sure the Black wire that comes in from the AC cord is not burned or damaged where it connects to the breaker. Often the slide terminals there will get corroded over time and cause a poor connection creating heat. That heat causes the breaker to trip more easily and after it has done that a coupe times the breaker is usually damaged and will not stay in the working position. You'll want to replace both the breaker and the crimp terminals on the wires that hook to the breaker.
Typically once the breaker is replaced the charger will work normally again.

I will try that is the problem continues. Last night I reset it. This morning it read 52V and the breaker/reset was NOT thrown. If it continues to getting thrown, I will replace. Thanks a lot
