Flipped Drive Belt on G1
So I just finished installing my new sled engine and took the cart for a test drive. At high speed I heard a sort of grinding noise for a second and then it went away. I stopped and looked at the engine and saw that the belt was upside down.
After searching I saw that I should use a sled belt because they are stronger. I have a plowman's belt now. So, does anyone know what belt I should get? Also, I have the original clutch for a G1 and would like to get a stronger spring. Does anyone know where I can get one? |

Don't know enough to be talking about this, but I think this is caused by a miss alignment issue. Motor not in line with the tranny.

Re: Flipped Drive Belt on G1
I should have included this in my OP.
The belt is 1 3/16" W and 36 3/8" OD The primary and secondary clutches are aligned quite well. I spent a lot of time to get that right. I had the cart up on jack sands earlier and noticed that as the secondary sheave opened up the belt bent outwards and deformed. I think I just need a stiffer belt that won't deform under pressure. |

I am with Mike on this one . I welded my motor mounts one time and did not get the motor straight . Ruined two belts before I fixed it

Re: Flipped Drive Belt on G1
Definitely belt alignment. To be more specific, clutch offset. The belt should continue to run in a straight line as the clutches shift, not "deform" as you noted. Belt length may be OK, but you need to move the engine over to adjust the offset so that belt runs true.
If I understand your statement correctly, you need to move the engine left (outboard, away from the center of the buggy) to keep the belts aligned. Here is a good tutorial on variable drive systems. Snowmobile drives work exactly like buggy drives: file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/jim/Local%20Settings/Temporary%20Internet%20Files/Content.IE5/9LEGPDHT/Snowmobile%2520Belt%2520Maintenance%25201.08%5B1%5 D.ppt#613,9,Maximizing Belt Life Well, that link doesn't work. It is a Powerpoint presentation by Carlisle belts. If you would like to see it, Yahoo or Google "Snowmobile Belt Alignment". Good reading. Last edited by GMB74; 10-09-2011 at 07:59 AM.. This is where I learned, from you, JMZ. What JMZ, left or right of center or not parallel?

Re: Flipped Drive Belt on G1
I spent over an hour aligning the engine to the rear clutch. Apparently I suck because I ran the engine on the jack again ant the alignment is obviously off. I am going to remove the engine and design some left / right alignment into the motor mounts so I can get it right.
I was worried about the belt sitting in the middle of the primary clutch. I should have clamped the primary closed on the belt so I could see where it would sit when the clutch engaged. I also think there is some rotation in the Z axis. It looks like the engine is higher on the right than the left. Ugh. It looked so good while outside of the cart. Maybe I'll skip the beer this time |

Re: Flipped Drive Belt on G1
I went to the steelyard and got a foot and a half of 1/2" square stock. Open the sheaves of the secondary clutch, stick the square stock between them and let the sheaves clamp down on it. The stock is long enough to reach forward to the primary clutch. Take measurements from the fixed sheave of the primary clutch to the square stock to check for shaft parallel and clutch offset.
