Hot rear wheel/hub/axle 48v 1999 Club Car DS

Played a lot of golf yesterday. Noticed on the last couple of holes a ticking sound, like something was getting hot. Felt down around the drivers side rear hub and axle behind the wheel, and it was pretty hot, passenger side was cool. Pulled it in and parked it.
I was wondering before I tear into it, what are the possibilities. Bearings, brakes? Procedures to repair, what to do first?

This is on 48v 1999 Club Car DS, bandit purple motor. Stock tires, no lift.

The brake slider is probably seized up. Take the brake shoes off and lubricate the brake slider at the bottom of the assembly until it is free to move by hand. If you can't free it up, take a 12 MM wrench and slightly loosen the retaining nut underneath the rubber boot behind the brake slider until you can get it free enough to move by hand. Re-install the brake shoes and you should be good to go.

OK. That's what I will do. I was getting myself ready to replace the axle bearings.

Can't get the drum off now...
Got it up on stands. The wheel was real hard to turn. Took wheel off. Disconnected the cable. Backed off the nut all the way on the bottom in back by the cable. Banged on it with a big maul, pulled, pried, banged, pulled, rinse, repeat. Got it to come off about 1/4 inch.Ground off the shoe pin heads in the back. That helped loosen it up more, but still, this thing won't come off!! Worked on it about 4 hours! Any ideas?

Get a bigger hammer and keep beating. You'll need a drum by the time you're done. It proves that it's seized.

I've got a 4" angle grinder. How hard would it be to cut this drum off?

It would be a royal pain. The axle and the brake cluster are back there too. You don't want to damage them.

I was thinking of cutting around the perimeter of the drum, out by the shoes. That way if I cut too far, it would just hit the shoe.
I'll give it a go with a bigger hammer first though.

auto parts store should have a puller they will rent or let you use....or just heat and beat...

All fixed. Busted the drum off. Busted the back edge of the drum off about half-way around. Same sledge hammer, just more gusto. New shoes & drum. Cleaned, lubed, and adjusted everything. Working good. Thanks.
