Gains from wires?
I have a new to me txt that has good batteries and for now is in good shape everywhere I can tell. I have seen the chips and know it really does not do anything to the torque, just the motor regen. I am hoping to do a few things over the next year or so and may look at several things but for the most part I have a regular neighborhood but with a couple pretty good hills. The cart will be used for hunting some but mostly play. So will I see any difference speed or torque from cables alone or will the whole swap be needed?
2 or 4 gauge cables Solenoid D I need heavier wires to motor or just battery? Controller and motor down the road. It does what I have needed it to so far but I have to tinker but don't know if i will see effects as I go or if I need to buy along and save and do together. sleepyluke.. The heavy wires will not increase your speed. I would suggest the whole swap. I have a 96 dcs. I am in the middle of doing the same thing.. I did buy the Alltrax controller combo from scottyb on here and my cart has improved a lot. I went with the heavier wires too. my cart went from about 12 mph to 22-mph..

Replace all 10 of the high current cables. 4Ga will suffice unless you go bigger than a 500A controller, or an efficiency nut like me.
Technically, the two cable to the motor A1 & A2 terminals carry slightly less current than the other eight, but the stock cables are an open end design and the minimum quality materials needed to last through the warranty period, so they should be replaced also. My three year old stock cables looked okay to my critical eye, but I felt a slight seat of the pants increase in low end acceleration (torque) when I upgraded to 2Ga. Of course, there was no increase in speed since a stock PDS controller (300A) limits the motor to about 4,400 RPM in Freedom mode, which translates to about 18.5 MPH with 18" tires and 12.44:1 gears. Going to a higher amperage aftermarket controller that doesn't limit motor RPM, will increase both speed and torque. For example: An Alltrax DCX400(PDS) will up the top speed into the 22-24 MPH range and up the torque by about 33% running on 36V with stock tires and motor. Using a cart for hunting means different things to different people, but however you use it, watch the motor temperature. Creeping along at slow speeds generates a lot of heat. |

The difference in my cart was a night and day kick in the rump from the barely existant stock cables to #2 wire.

Hunting to me means to and from the stand by way of gravel road and highlines with a hopeful deer pick up thrown in. I have 23s on it now and really fine with speed but would like a little more torque. I plan to do all, but money says otherwise so trying to see if there is any bang for the buck so to speak. Thanks for the help and any more thoughts to send my way.

Running 23" tires reduces stock torque by 22%.
Mechanically, the torque can be returned to the stock value by returning to stock height tires (18") or changing the stock differential gear ratio (12.44:1) to about 15:1. Electrically, you can increase the torque the stock motor produces by using a controller that allows more amps to flow through the motor. A 400A controller will allow the motor to generate about 1/3 more torque the the stock PDS controller (300A), so the will be a net torque gain of about 11% over stock with the oversized tires. Off course, the cables and solenoid with have to be upgraded to handle the higher current flow and the battery pack will have to be able to produce the needed amps. ------------- Sound like your hunting trips are a mix of cross-country and mild to medium off-road, so the increased motor heating caused by more amps flowing through it may not be a major issue. ----------- Also, by upping the battery pack voltage to 48V (or 42V like I'm doing), the amount of motor heat generated for the same amount of torque, is reduced. So, keep that in mind when selecting the controller and solenoid. |
