sometimes it wont go, no clicking or anything then slam footfeet down a few times and away she goes

I'm still guessing you have a series cart but it would be a lot easier for folks to respond if you can identify the cart you are talking about.
Lift the seat and look at the control box cover. Is there a "Run/Tow" toggle switch on it? If not, you have a series cart. If you do have a toggle the cart is

Sounds like a gummed up microswitch in the ITS box. (Box under the floor the accelerator pedal linkage attaches to)
