Re: Drum brake shoes
The shoes don't go all the way to the edge of the drum, so as the drum wears, a ridge forms. This is just like what happens to the cylinder wall of an internal combustion engine. They make ridge reamers to cure that.
Run your fingers from the inside of the drum from around the middle to the outer edge. If you feel a ridge, it can prevent you from removing or installing the drum over the shoes. |

Re: Drum brake shoes
It wouldn't hurt to run some Emery-Cloth or 80-grit paper over the surface on the drums. They get glazed over time, and new shoes won't seat properly on a glazed surface.Just scuff them quick. If there is a ridge, the best thing to do is grind it down,so that you can get your drums on/off easier.I usually take a 4" grinder and just tilt it on an angle and run it around the edge of the drum,so that it knocks the ridge down with a little bevel on the outer edge.Hope this helps.

Re: Drum brake shoes
I'm thinking the auto adjusters are not working. If you take the hub off and have someone push the brake pedal, you should see the star wheel turn when the pedal is released. If not, start looking as to why..

The manual tells how to test the auto adjusters.

Re: Drum brake shoes
As for the auto-adjuster. When I put the new shoes on I had my kid push on the brake peddle and I saw the auto-adjuster move and spin the star. So it appeared to be working.
I noticed that it was difficult to get the drum on over the first part of the shoe. Then it seemed to go on easier. Is this because of the ridge or the normal bevel of the drum |

Re: Drum brake shoes
Thanks Yurtle. At some point I will have time to work on this again. I will use the dremel and a sanding wheel to smooth out the ridge.

Re: Drum brake shoes
If they work, there's no need to remove the ridge. It simply makes it easier to get the drums off and on. It allows you to get the shoe adjustment closer and still be able to reinstall the drum.

Re: Drum brake shoes
If the adjusters are working you should be able to just pump the brakes and they will tighten up. If not, I would take the brake cable loose at the hub and see if they move freely .. Oh and you should hear a click each time the adjuster moves..

Re: Drum brake shoes
Finally got the time to get to this.
I used the dremel to smooth the ridge. Which is more like a lip to me. But now that I have seen it, I know what you mean. And low and behold the brakes work great. Thanks for all the help. |
