Default Starts slow, faster after reverse

Have a 2001 ezgo I just put new batteries in. It's been sitting for 5 years, so it needed a good cleaning also (had to spray off the battery tray). When I put it in forward, it goes very slow. If I stop and reverse for a few feet, it will usually go full speed once I put it back in forward. It has a speed chip, or whatever you call the red wire jumper you put on the controller. F/R switch is on the dash. I charged it for 13 hours after the new batteries were installed.

I think that about covers it. Thanks for any help!

Odd that reverse should have any bearing on forward speed..... the motor may be full of carbon dust from the brushes wearing down...

Let the charger run until it shuts off by itself

I will. If its doing the same thing, I will check the brushes. Anything else it might be? I had heard that the speed chip was hard on the motors.

Was the Run/Tow switch in Tow while the batteries were being replaced?

----------------
Put controller in diagnostic mode and listen for the beep code when the cart is misbehaving.
(The text at the bottom of the attached label tells you how to get into the diagnostic mode.)

----------------
In and of itself, the "Speed Chip" (Freedom mode) isn't any harder on the motor than the other PDS modes.

All it does is programs the controller to cut back on the amps the motor is allowed to draw when the motor RPM reaches about 4,400RPM.
The other PDS modes govern the motor to lower RPMs and the two Hill modes (Steep and Mild) activate the regenerative braking feature, which does cause the motor to heat up more.

Tall tires and a heavy foot on the throttle are motor (and controller) killers.

If it sat for 5 yr. you might want to see if the brakes are dragging.
Does the cart roll freely when pushed by hand?

Rolls freely. Have to hit reverse and switch to forward while still slightly moving, beeps a couple of times, then hit throttle and after a couple of times it goes back to full speed. If there is not any torque on the motor when I put it back in forward, it continues to go in the slow speed. It was in tow mode when I changed out the batteries.

When cart is moving in one direction and you flip the F/R switch to Neutral or all the way to the opposite direction, the controller applies full Regen Braking and pulses the beeper until cart stops.

That might cause some things to shake enough to move them slightly.
Take a close look at the F1 and F2 cables inside the cable holder the routes the around the battery frame.

Also check the speed sensor wires to the motor. (3 small wires the plug into backside of motor and J-5 on the controller.)

------------
Does the cart ever go slow in Reverse, or is the slow speed problem only in forward?

Could be the contacts inside the F&R are pitted and compromised?
