Yes the controller mounting is correct.

The motor studs are identified by stamps in the metal housing (A1, A2, S1, S2). You may have to wire brush off some dirt to read it.

1. I'm not familiar with SPM controllers, so I don't know if the fan sucks or blows, or when it runs, but if it blows and runs a lot, exhaust air will be blowing against one (or two) of the batteries, potentially warming it (or them) more than the rest of the pack.

May not be an issue, but possibly something to take into consideration.

Other than that, I don't believe the controller knows, or cares, which way is up.

2. The two studs on the lighter gray end cover are A1 & A2. The two studs on the darker gray motor housing are S1 & S2
The cable from the M- terminal on the original controller should have been connected to A1.
A1 and S1 are adjacent to each other and A2 and S2 are adjacent to each other.

As long as the cable originally connected to the "A" studs are reconnected to the "A" studs and the ones originally connected the the "S" studs are reconnected to the "S" studs, the motor will run.
Then is just a matter of switching cables to 1 and 2 on one of the sets if the cart's direction of travel does match the F/R lever position.
