Is it the Drive Clutch or Drive belt?
Hello All -
Just purchased a 1998 EZ GO GAS golf cart yesterday and we need some technical advice. A couple things we noticed (and thought were fixable) is the steering and the either the drive clutch or the drive belt. Steering - While driving there seems to be way to much play in the wheel. It's almost nerve racking driving b/c the entire time you think you might hit someone passing by. Is there a gear box or teeth that have been worn somewhere that might need to be changed? (picture of location would help greatly) At the very bottom of the steering assembly it seems like the arm that is attached to the right wheel / steering assembly is loose (there is a nut at the top of the housing. We have yanked on the tie rods and they seem to be fine. Drive Clutch / Belt - The belt seems to be awfully loose, but maybe that is normal b/c when you press the accelerator the clutch tightens up and there isn't as much slack. I did read on here that this may help increase power quite a bit. However, when the clutch engaged it seemed to just grab it and go. There was no subtle, hence the jerking issue we have encountered. Is this a belt issue or a clutch issue? We lifted the rear end up on blocks and only the driver side rear tire spun. The right rear tire didn't move. Is this normal? Thanks for any help. A manual would be useful but I haven't come across one for this particular model. |

Re: Is it the Drive Clutch or Drive belt?
If you following the steering column through the floorboard you will see bolted to the underside the steering box. One common issue (although you may have other issues) is the bronze rack wears and no longer makes a good fit with the steel pinion. I suggest that you get underneath and with a friend gently oscillating the steering wheel see if there is any slack at that end.
With regard to the belt issue this is quite common and very easy to fix. What happens is that the belt is only gripped by the edges. Over time the belt wears and becomes narrower, this means that the drive clutch has to close further in order to grip the belt. As the clutch closes the more the engine revs up what is happening is that instead of gripping a new belt at say 1000 rpm yours may not grip until say 2000 rpm and thus snatches on take off. Fit a new belt and your problems will be fixed. Yes it is normal for just one wheel to spin, this is the correct action of the differential drive. Re: Is it the Drive Clutch or Drive belt?
Thanks -
purchased the smaller drive belt and then the starter/gen belt as they both have never been replaced. also bought an air filter b/c there wasn't one in the compartment. noticed there is some oil that smells gassy in the air filter box. assuming it is pushing up from the carb. should this be a great concern? we are going to install new belts tonite. post outcome upon finishing. thanks! |

Re: Is it the Drive Clutch or Drive belt?
The belts seemed to have solved the jerking... though the drive belt is starting to fray a little. Now to cure the other problem which i posted a new thread.
There is a little play in the steering wheel. Teeth seem to be fine. Im concerned about the idler arm which wiggles a little and the boot above that is busted that holds the grease. Could this be the problem? Can you get a new boot? |
